Arson attacks in Southend

FIREFIGHTERS were called to two suspected arson attacks this weekend.

Crews from Leigh fire station were called to Archer Avenue, Southend, at 9.10pm on Saturday evening after rubbish had been set light under a stairwell.

The blaze spread up the side of a building but nobody was injured.

In the second attack, crews from Leigh were called out again at 4.10am on Sunday morning to reports of a fire in a rubbish bin.

The fire, in Clifftown Road, Southend, had spread up the side of the Mothercare building and crews had to break down the door of the shop to make sure it had not spread inside.

Both fires are being treated as suspicious and a joint police and fire service investigation has been launched.
